Teaching Cloud Storage and Data Management: Lessons, Labs, and Tips for Using the NetApp Certified Storage Associate-Hybrid Cloud Certification Curriculum in Your IT Programs

Track Room Location: Heritage Hall, 134

Description

As more organizations adopt cloud computing and service models, their ability to store, move, protect, and manage data in a cloud infrastructure quickly becomes a primary concern. Moving data from on-premise cloud infrastructures to public cloud providers and hyper-scaler services like AWS and Azure makes data management even more complex, and requires new solutions and skills. As Forrester recently highlighted:

“Hybrid cloud is not just a fad. In fact, more than half (58%) of all organizations surveyed in Forrester’s Business Technographics® Global Infrastructure Survey, 2015, highlighted that they have adopted and are using multiple cloud environments — either public, hosted private, or internal private.” 1

To prepare for this move to the hybrid cloud, NetApp has developed a new, foundational-level certification - the NetApp Certified Storage Associate – Hybrid Cloud (NCSA-HC), specifically designed to introduce college and university students to the underlying concepts and technologies that hybrid clouds are built on. This innovative curriculum has a hands-on/applied learning orientation, and integrates web-based courses, virtual, self-paced labs & exercises, “test drive” demos & labs working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), a selection of just-in-time learning “Knowledge Bytes” and custom videos from NetApp’s Technical Support community. These learning assets provide a basic, yet academically rigorous track of study on hybrid cloud infrastructures. Additional review materials include an Instructor’s Guide, Student Study Guide and Practice Exam.

This track will prepare faculty to teach with, and use the innovative NCSA-HC certification curriculum as part of a dedicated storage course or as a 35-hr “module” for a cloud services course. Its modular structure will also allow instructors to leverage pieces of the curriculum in networking and virtualization courses. The track’s design is a hands-on, train-the-trainer model. You will review and take several web-based courses, you will work on recently updated self-paced labs, and you will have an opportunity to “Test Drive” and set-up NetApp’s Cloud ONTAP software within Amazon Web Services. You will leave the 5-day track with a deep understanding of cloud storage issues and approaches; you will have an in-depth understanding of the products and technologies that enable a Hybrid Cloud Solution and you will have the expertise to deploy and teach the NCSA-HC at your institution.

The goal for the week is to prepare you to understand and add value to the NCSA-HC curriculum, and to arm you with ideas and exercises to use with your students. You will also be enrolled in and eligible to complete the NC/HCSA yourself. All participants will be offered a Pearson test voucher to take the NC/HCSA exam at no charge.

PLEASE NOTE: This track will be very similar to last year’s "Cloud Storage" track, so only retake this if you want to relive that experience! Since the tech world is always innovating, we will also blend in discussions on industry trends such as Dev Ops use cases for the hybrid cloud, data demands in a 3rd platform environment, and how a cloud first business mandate impacts storage architecture decisions.

Prerequisites

Experience teaching general IT or cloud-related courses, and/or experience in working with programs such as the Cisco & VMware academies or AWS Educate would be helpful. A basic understanding of networking and cloud services would be helpful. Interest in data center and cloud infrastructures a plus.

Three Objectives

1. Introduce attendees to the fundamentals of today’s hybrid cloud storage and data management solutions and storage industry trends & directions to enable them to infuse cloud data management content and concepts into various IT programs and courses.
2. Provide participants with an in-depth, hands-on, interactive, train-the-trainer experience based on the NetApp Certified Hybrid Cloud Storage Associates certification curriculum and labs.
3. Review/demonstrate the NC/HCSA Instructor Resources to prepare participants to teach and deliver all of the content in the NC-/HCSA certification to their students – and provide them a framework to add cloud storage courses and certification to their networking & virtualization courses and related-IT programs.
